This includes spay/neuter, mass/lump removal, foreign body removal, and laceration repairs. We also perform complex gastrointestinal and urogenital surgery. Most clients are surprised at the range of procedures that veterinarians perform to return their pets to good health. For example, at Animalcare Veterinary Hospital we quite frequently have to remove diseased kidneys, cut out large parts of the intestines and splice the cut ends together, remove bladder stones, take out entire spleens to rid the body of malignant tumours, repair or remove damaged eyes and much more.
ORTHOPAEDIC (BONE) SURGERY
Though orthopaedic surgery is most commonly used to treat broken bones, it can also be used to correct a variety of ailments including ligament tears, patellar luxation, growth deformities, and joint disease. We perform orthopaedic surgeries for hip dysplasia, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair, and amputations. We are one of the few veterinary hospitals in the Caribbean that is able to perform surgeries on the spine to manage disc disease.
Any pet that undergoes orthopaedic surgery will require many weeks of restricted exercise and constant monitoring. It is important to understand that almost all orthopaedic surgeries come with a lengthy recovery time and, depending on how well your pet is doing, shockwave, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or other regenerative therapies may be recommended to relieve acute or chronic pain and to accelerate healing of the injured tissues and joints.
SPAY & NEUTER SURGERY
Spaying is a term that describes the removal of the entire reproductive system of a female dog or cat. Neutering is a term that describes the castration, or the removal of the testicles, of a male dog or cat. Veterinarians perform these surgical procedures to make dogs and cats incapable of reproducing and more easily integrable in the complex multidimensional relationships that exist today between humans and animals, especially in large built-up areas.
Over the past several decades, our veterinary team has successfully performed spay and neuter procedures on countless dogs of all breeds and ages. While we do not consider spay and neuter procedures to be “routine” and all general anaesthesia procedures have a risk of complications, spay and neuter procedures are considered safe and are strongly recommended by all major veterinary organizations including the Jamaica Veterinary Medical Association.
Spaying or neutering your pet can help them live a longer, healthier life, minimize behaviour problems, and help control the serious problem we have in Jamaica of a large population of unwanted and unowned dogs and cats. Spaying also helps prevent breast cancer and uterine infections, which can be fatal to both dogs and cats.
